Blidworth Methodist Church

Appeal to Local Pianists

A local church desperately needs pianists to volunteer to join its rota of players. Although the church has a Clarinova on which pre-recorded songs and hymns can be played the congregation at Blidworth Methodist Church miss having a regular pianist to lead worship at the Main Street services.
Minister David Greenwood said: “We welcome anyone from the local area to come to our church but we are in particular need of pianists to play. It would be on a rota basis so can be a big or small commitment.”
The church meet Sundays at 10.30am.

Blidworth & District Art Club

Blidworth & District Art Club has been meeting continuously each week for the last eight years. Throughout that time members have thoroughly enjoyed producing many and varied pictures using watercolours, acrylics, pastels and oils. Many of these pictures have been seen and admired in the exhibitions held at the library and at the Christmas Lights ceremonies. Members are very proud of the standard of work produced, but most of all, has been the pleasure they have had in their weekly gatherings, exchanging ideas and sharing of expertise.
Now is the time for them to take a Summer break Holidays, Gardening, DIY etc are taking priority - so the next meeting will be on Tuesday, 02 September from 7pm to 9pm and held weekly from then on at the Methodist Church, Main Street.
If you are interested as would like to join us do come along then. You don't have to be expert just enjoy having a go!

Volunteer Driver Training
For Notts Schemes

Volunteers with Car Schemes across the county play a vital role in providing transport for people who would otherwise not be able to get out and about. However, until now there has not been a training programme to assist these people in carrying out their volunteering activities.
Rural Access to Services Partnership (RASP) is now able to deliver this training at four locations in Nottinghamshire. RASP Officer Elspeth Mallowan can be contacted on 01623 727600 or email emallowan@rcan.org.uk

Hollyoaks Hunks Challenge

Dear Sir
I read with interest your article (in volume 8 of Blidworth Focus) about the Hollyoaks football team challenge, with monies going to charity. The problem was the match was on 19th April and I did not receive your brochure until Wednesday 7th May.

Our response
Unfortunately we received the item too late to include in our April issue, but we considered it to be sufficiently interesting to include for the background information contained in it.

Further Literacy
Support Programme

Some of the children have been involved with an intervention programme designed to offer structured additional support. The children involved have found the programme to be captivating and it has sustained their interest throughout. We are very proud of the work the children have produced, which has included writing to persuade, fantastic tales and writing to inform. All the children involved can now apply the skills and strategies learnt in independent writing. We would like to congratulate all the children involved and let them know how proud of them we are.

Hartley's Adventure in Hawaii

Hartley has just been on an exciting holiday to Hawaii with Mrs Carol Wright, Chair of Governors. Hartley stayed on O'ahu, which is one of five islands and stayed at the famous Waikiki Beach. This is the tourist centre of the island, with two mile sandy beach and surfers everywhere as well as other water sports.

Visitors to the island are greeted with a lei, a necklace of brightly coloured flowers. Hartley is wearing a shell version that he was given when he went shopping. Hartley went on a tour of the island, where he saw the Diamond head crater, he also visited a pineapple plantation, went whale watching and went to the beach, where there was a shark swimming in the water!

Hartley came away with his very own memento, an authentic Hawaiian shirt. He even saw the largest shirt in the world 44XL.
Hartley has told me that this was his best holiday ever! (I wonder what adventures lay in store for Hartley in the future!)

FOREIGN TRAVEL

Despite increased fuel and airport taxes airport chaos and delays, many of us will chose to travel abroad on business, on a gap year, for adventure or just pleasure. The purpose of the journey and the destination can make a considerable difference to the precautions we need to take to avoid becoming ill.
The first consideration is the flight. Considerable publicity is given to developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The dangerous consequence is a clot breaking off and landing in the lung with a possible fatal out come. DVT can occur with any period of prolonged inactivity. It must be said that the cramped seating conditions in tourist class are a predisposition. Avoid tight clothing. The main prevention is to keep moving as much as possible whilst sitting, frequent movements of the toes and feet do help. At every opportunity get up and walk about. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol. In hospital, pressure stockings are fitted after operations and could help in long distance flights. To take an aspirin before the flight is often recommended to reduce clotting in those who can tolerate aspirin. Remember, sitting at a desk or in a motorcar for prolonged periods can be just as dangerous as an aircraft flight for causing a DVT.
Most of the air in aircraft is recycled and viruses may not be filtered out. To pick up a virus infection is common and difficult to avoid. This may be very important if some one is suffering from, say, chest or heart conditions. In general the lower air pressure is tolerated by most patients suffering from heart and lung conditions. If in doubt take medical advice.
Fear of flying is a real problem with some travellers. This can apply even to even seasoned travellers. The best treatment I can advise is a beta-blocker, often used for treating blood pressure. This can help to control the physical symptoms of tension, without sedation. The treatment should be started some time before the flight. It is not recommended in asthmatics.
The precautions to prevent illness whilst abroad depend on the activities, location and accommodation. Working in slum conditions there is a much greater risk of AIDs. TB., cholera, typhoid and other water borne diseases. AIDs is rampant in sub-Saharan. Africa and the far East In general AIDS is not a cause for concern. Ordinary physical contact does not spread the virus. Unprotected sex certainly can and does spread the virus. Body fluids, mainly blood, are a very potent source of the virus. Cholera causes very severe diarrhoea and can be fatal if not treated adequately. It usually occurs from contaminated water in unhygienic conditions. Immunisation against cholera is fairly effective. If travelling or working in an area possibly infected by dysentery or cholera water treatment is essential. Polio and tetanus may be prevalent certainly make sure your immunisations are up to date.
In the main tourist resorts hygiene standards should be quite reasonable otherwise there would be no tourist industry in that area. The hygiene standards in some resorts in this country are not beyond criticism.
Malaria is still a serious problem in many parts of the world. The principle prevention is to avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellents, keeping the body covered and using netting over the bed and at the windows. The next line of defence is to use medication to kill off any bugs that have been injected into the blood stream by a mosquito. Different forms of malaria, in different parts of the world, need different medical regimes; therefore, specific advice is necessary.
It might sound stupid but if on treatment make sure you take enough medication with you. Recently I had to write a prescription for a visitor from Australia because he ran out of tablets.
Make sure you have adequate insurance cover. Some countries have reciprocal arrangements with the NHS, for this, you need the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This provides some, but not necessarily adequate, cover and not repatriation so additional private cover is needed even within Europe.
In the case of tropical seaside holidays the main hazard is the sun. I have seen many people whose holiday has been spoilt by getting severely sun burnt; gradual acclimatisation and sun block are the best preventatives.
Go and do enjoy your holiday and remember the most dangerous part of your holiday is driving to the airport.

“Smartest” Charity Shop Now Open

The Cornwater Club Charity Shop was successfully launched on Saturday May 17th in the premises at 18 Queen Street, Mansfield.
The new shop has been set up to help fund the Cornwater Club and Thursday Club, the lunch and social clubs for senior residents of Blidworth and Ravenshead, which meet at Ravenshead Leisure Centre.
The outlet offers unusually high quality clothing at low prices: what's becoming known as “charity chic”. This is due to the enormous quantity and range of goods that were (and are still being) donated by Blidworth and Ravenshead residents. It makes the new shop possibly the smartest charity outlet in the area. Opening hours are 9.30 am to 4 pm, Monday to Saturday.
The main feature is a selection of ladies' fashions with some of the most sought-after high street names, including Ted Baker, Morgan, John Rocha, Eastex, Windsmoor and Country Casuals. Fashion-conscious men are also catered for with labels such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Burberry. Among other quality goods on sale are jewellery, shoes, children's clothes, china and glass, household items, pictures, books, videos, and CDs. All are selling at bargain prices.
Large back-up stocks from the two superb “Stock the Shop” donation days are being held at several commercial storage units, so shoppers can be confident that the high quality will be maintained. Various special features with seasonal and topical themes are being planned at intervals in the future.
In his very first public engagement, the newly elected Chairman of Mansfield District Council, Cllr Alan Fell, ceremonially cut the ribbon. “Older people are some of the most vulnerable and hard to reach people in our area,” he said. “
Any initiative that supports and identifies these vulnerable people can only be commended.” Cllr Fell is pictured with Sharon Baum, shop manager, on the left, and Melissa Blythe, marketing manager.
Ideal location The shop is situated at 18 Queen Street, an ideal position in the heart of Mansfield's shopping area. A short walk from both the Market Square and the Westgate Department Store, there are several convenient car parks nearby. It's also handy for the bus station. The thoroughfare between St Peter's Retail Park and the Four Seasons is very busy so we're expecting our window displays to attract a lot of passers-by. With that and the superb ranges on sale at bargain prices, we're certain that the Cornwater Club Charity shop will appeal to the people of Blidworth.

Spiritual well-being.- Forgiveness

When our 4 children were young, we went to Northern Spain on a camping holiday.
We pitched our tent next to a mature Spanish couple, parking our car next to theirs.
A couple of days later the man came over to us, and signalled that his car had a dent in it right by where our door would have opened. We protested our innocence - difficult when we could not speak one another's language!
However, later, upon interrogating our children, we realised that one of them had been responsible. The child was duly taken to tearfully apologise in phrase book Spanish, and I asked, by showing my cheque book, what the couple wished me to do about repairing the damage. "Oh, no, no, no" they gesticulated, they hadn't come looking for recompense, they were merely ensuring no further bumps occurred. Whereupon the lady gave my tearful son a big hug, and promptly found sweets for all our children.
On our final day, we go out to buy them a bottle of wine as a sign of our appreciation for their kind forgiveness. But when we present this to them, they present us with an even better bottle. "It's from my wife's village," the man explains, "you must visit us sometime!"
This little incident so reminds me of the attitude of my heavenly Father. I'm often "bumping the car" as it were; hurting others by being thoughtless, selfish or proud. Yet when I say sorry, He not only forgives me just like that; He also blesses me with all sorts of good things in spite of my action. What's more, I can't outgive Him no matter how I try.
It's one of the great Christian messages of hope that we can be forgiven and have God as our Father

With prayers for a hope-filled springtime,
Jeremy Erde (Sherwood Forest Community Church)

Ofsted Visits Our Nursery -
What a Great Result

The Old Fire Station Day Nursery had an Ofsted Inspection (long overdue) in March. The nursery was delighted to be able to inform parents and carers that we had been awarded the rating GOOD for both our standards of care and education. Ofsted interprets ‘Good’’ as ‘strong in this area’ Some of the comments made by the inspector were ‘Children are happy and confident in the setting and benefit from very warm and affectionate relationships with staff members’ also ‘Children are motivated and engaged in their play and learning’ We are really very proud that Ofsted has recognised the high level of care and education we deliver at our nursery. A big Thank you to all our girls for their dedication and hard work! If you would like to read our report in full please go to www.ofsted.gov.uk (it can be found under 2008, March, initial letter ‘O’)
